Fall Fill-In Word Puzzle
Celebrate the fall season with this fun fall-themed fill-in word puzzle.

My Inspiration for Creating this Puzzle
I have always loved logic puzzles and word puzzles. I used to spend hours with a book of fill-in puzzles that I purchased at a garage sale. I loved filling in the grids of letters and applying logic along the way to figure out what word needed to go in what spot.
About a year ago, I purchased a set of puzzle and game making software to create some resources for my classroom and this blog. One of those resources was a crossword puzzle maker.
This past week, I had the brilliant idea that I could use a crossword puzzle maker to produce the word fill-in puzzles that I had enjoyed so much when I was a student myself. I would just need to generate a crossword and then delete all of the numbers from the crossword puzzle grid.
To test out my idea, I decided to put together this fall fill-in puzzle.
This puzzle is just one of many free printable fill-in puzzles (also known as criss cross puzzles) that I have created for my own classroom and am sharing with you!

Instructions
Place each of the provided fall words in the grid exactly one time each. One letter must be placed in each box.
Using this Puzzle in the Classroom
I am thinking that I might put this out next week as part of my puzzle of the week selection. I’ve never really tried giving students a paper and pencil puzzle to complete as an early finisher activity, but I’m always open to trying new things.
Last week, we tried out the Fall Square Logic Puzzle, and it was a huge hit.
Obviously, the logic required to solve this fall logic puzzle should be a bit basic for my 11th and 12th grade students. But I still think it should be fun.
I am definitely not an expert when it comes to teaching elementary aged children, but I would feel confident in recommending this puzzle for 3rd grade and up.
If you like using this type of puzzle in your classroom, be sure to let me know. If I get enough positive feedback, I will start creating other seasonal fill-in puzzles.

Update 9/25/24: The first version I uploaded of this puzzle had one of the words labeled with an incorrect number of letters. It has been corrected and re-uploaded. If you were one of the 53 people to download the puzzle with “Gourds” labeled as a five letter word, I apologize for any inconvenience.
Puzzle Solutions
Puzzle solutions are available on a password-protected solution page. I do not openly post the puzzle answer keys because one of my goals as a resource creator is to craft learning experiences for students that are non-google-able. I want teachers to be able to use these puzzles in their classrooms without the solutions being found easily on the Internet.
Please email me at sarah@mathequalslove.net for the password to the answer key database featuring all of my printable puzzles and math worksheets. I frequently have students emailing me for the answer key, so please specify in your email what school you teach at and what subjects you teach. If you do not provide these details, I will not be able to send you the password.
Not a teacher? Go ahead and send me an email as well. Just let me know what you are using the puzzles for. I am continually in awe of how many people are using these puzzles with scouting groups, with senior adults battling dementia, or as fun activities in their workplace. Just give me enough details so I know you are not a student looking for answers to the puzzle that was assigned as their homework!
I gave this to my 5th graders yesterday and they loved it! Some struggle with spelling and this is a fun opportunity for them to practice the correct spelling of these words in a puzzle. Thanks for all the awesome resources!!!!
This is excellent to hear!
