What are Suguru Puzzles?

Suguru Puzzles are number-filling logic puzzle invented by prolific Japanese puzzle creator Naoki Inaba in 2001. Suguru Puzzles are also known as Tectonic Puzzles or Number Block Puzzles (ナンバーブロック).

Suguru puzzles feature a grid that has been divided into regions known as “cages.” Your task is to fill each cage with numbers 1 up to its size, using each number once. (If a cage has four squares, it will be filled with the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4.)

Two cells that touch in the grid, even diagonally, cannot hold the same number. Some of the numbers are given at the beginning of the puzzle to help you solve the rest.

Here is a sample suguru puzzle and solution to help you understand how the puzzle works.

File Details

These 20×20 suguru puzzles are available in four levels of difficulty: easy, medium, hard, and challenging. As the difficulty level increases, the number of pre-filled cells at the beginning of the puzzle decreases.

I have created 12 suguru (tectonic) puzzles for each of the four levels of difficulty. You can choose to print these 48 total suguru puzzles as either 1 puzzle per page or 4 puzzles per page.

I recommend the four puzzle per page version if you are trying to save paper (and have amazing eyesight).

The one puzzle per page version is a bit more spacious. It can also be used in a dry erase pocket with students for solving.

Puzzle Solutions

Puzzle solutions are available on a password-protected solution page. I do not openly post the puzzle answer keys because one of my goals as a resource creator is to craft learning experiences for students that are non-google-able. I want teachers to be able to use these puzzles in their classrooms without the solutions being found easily on the Internet.

Please email me at sarah@mathequalslove.net for the password to the answer key database featuring all of my printable puzzles and math worksheets. I frequently have students emailing me for the answer key, so please specify in your email what school you teach at and what subjects you teach. If you do not provide these details, I will not be able to send you the password.

Not a teacher? Go ahead and send me an email as well. Just let me know what you are using the puzzles for. I am continually in awe of how many people are using these puzzles with scouting groups, with senior adults battling dementia, or as fun activities in their workplace. Just give me enough details so I know you are not a student looking for answers to the puzzle that was assigned as their homework!
