I created this exponents chart that lists the first 8 powers of each of the numbers from 2 to 9 for my students. I thought it might also be of use to use and your students.
We started reviewing exponent rules in Pre-Calculus today. We’re doing this in preparation for our exponentials/logarithms unit which is extra important this year because my students did not get to this topic last year in Algebra 2.
When Oklahoma shut schools down after Spring Break for COVID-19, we were told to review previously taught material with students and to avoid introducing any new content. Thus, my students got through Algebra 2 without ever being exposed to the concept of a logarithm.
One of my most useful classroom displays during our exponentials/logarithms unit is my Powers Posters that I printed on 11 x 17 cardstock. We reference these posters constantly.
Today a student came by later in the day to ask a clarifying question on fractional exponents. I showed her how we could use the posters to make quicker work of the problem.
She asked what she should do if she was working on these problems in another class without the posters to reference.
It was at this point that I decided I needed to make a printable handout version to give to my students to stick in their math binders. It should have dawned on me to do this sooner.
I’ve definitely had students in the past take a picture of the posters on their phone to use as a reference tool…
It’s now my planning period, and I have put together a powers chart for my students. I thought I should share it with you as well!
I’ve already got a stack of 100 pretty power charts printed and ready to go for tomorrow, so I’m feeling proud of myself.
