I had an epiphany the other day that the classic addition pyramid puzzles could be reimagined as a Christmas tree if I added a “trunk” to the bottom of the pyramid. Creating these puzzles was one of the items on my to do list for the week I had off for Thanksgiving Break.

12/8/24 Update: I have also created a collection of Christmas Tree Integer Addition Puzzles if you want to fit in some extra practice with positives and negatives!.

Instructions

The number in each cell of the Christmas tree is the sum of the two numbers directly below it. Fill in the missing numbers to complete the Christmas tree.

Five Levels of Difficulty

These Christmas Tree Addition Puzzles are available in five different levels of difficulty.

The first three levels are intended for younger students. These are perfect for giving students practice with addition and mental math. There is minimal logic required in solving these Christmas tree math puzzles.

Levels 4 and 5 are intended more as a logic puzzle than a mental math practice puzzle.

Download and Printing Options

There are five different sets of these Christmas Tree math puzzles that can be downloaded. Each set consists of five puzzles involving the exact same set of numbers in five different levels.

Printing one of these sets of puzzles is ideal for the teacher who is using this puzzle in the classroom but wants to differentiate and give different students in the class different levels. Each student’s finished puzzle will be identical. They will just start with different clues.

Alternatively, you can download the mixed set of puzzles that has 5 different puzzles. The Level 1 puzzle has different numbers than the Level 2 puzzle which has different numbers than the Level 3 puzzle, and so on.

Puzzle Solutions

I intentionally do not make answers to the printable math puzzles I share on my blog available online because I strive to provide learning experiences for my students that are non-google-able. I would like other teachers to be able to use these puzzles in their classrooms as well without the solutions being easily found on the Internet.

However, I do recognize that us teachers are busy people and sometimes need to quickly reference an answer key to see if a student has solved a puzzle correctly or to see if they have interpreted the instructions properly.

If you are a teacher who is using these puzzles in your classroom, please send me an email at sarah@mathequalslove.net with information about what you teach and where you teach. I will be happy to forward an answer key to you.

Not a teacher? Go ahead and send me an email as well. Just let me know what you are using the puzzles for. I am continually in awe of how many people are using these puzzles with scouting groups, with senior adults battling dementia, as fun activities in their workplace, or as a birthday party escape room.
