Uses for Blank Number Pyramid Templates

These templates allow you to easily differentiate for various students. If students are struggling, give them a template with less rows. If students need a challenge, give them a template with more rows.

Mental Math Practice

Give each student a blank number pyramid template in a dry erase pocket. Randomly generate numbers for students to write in the bottom row of the template.

If you are using the 3 row template, you will need 3 numbers. If you are using the 6 row template, you will need 6 numbers. And so on…

Students must use mental math to add the first two numbers. Write the answer in the square above those two numbers. Repeat with adding the second and third numbers. Write the answer in the square above those two numbers.

Continue until you reach the top of the pyramid. Check to see if students arrived at the correct sum at the top of the pyramid.

Integer Addition Practice

Follow the same steps as above for mental math practice, but place integers on the bottom row of the pyramid.

If I was doing this with middle school students, I would not focus on mental math strategies here but recommend the use of manipulatives such as two color counters or number lines.

Fraction or Decimal Addition Practice

This could also work by generating fractions or decimals for each square at the bottom of the pyramid.
