Mix and Match Mass Mini Lab
I used this Mix and Match Mass Mini Lab with my Chemistry students at the beginning of the year to give them some practice estimating mass and measuring mass using the triple beam balance. I wanted my students to get a feel for different masses. For example, I wanted my students to have a visual in their head for what a gram is. I modified this from Sciencespot.net.
Groups had to find items in the classroom that they thought would match their target mass. Then, they had to find the mass of the items and record their actual mass.
It was interesting to watch students get creative as they progressed throughout the activity.
This activity definitely gave my students more confidence using the triple beam balance.
My previous school did not have digital scales, so it was crucial for us to learn to use the triple beam balance.
