What is Tic Tac Toe?
Tic Tac Toe is a classic game played with pencil and paper that is also known as Noughts and Crosses. It is a two-player strategy game which is played on a 3×3 grid. Traditionally, the game of tic-tac-toe is played with one player using the symbol “X” and the other player using the symbol “O.”
The goal of a game of tic tac toe is to be the first player to achieve a row, column, or diagonal of three of their symbols in a row. Often this is summarized as “Tic Tac Toe. Three in a row.”
Game play is quick and accessible for players of a wide variety of ages.
Printable Tic-Tac-Toe Boards
To make it easy to have students play tic tac toe in the classroom, I created a free printable game board in pdf format for students to use. There are actually several different templates included.
The first page of the file is a blank tic tac toe board. This tic tac toe template can be laminated or placed in a sheet protector or dry erase pocket so it can be used over and over again with a dry erase marker.
Or, you can skip the dry erase markers and print the second page of the PDF file which consists of a set of printable game pieces that can be used to play tic tac toe again and again. If you go this route of printable paper game pieces, you would not necessarily need to laminate the printable tic-tac-toe board.
If you don’t want to fuss with cutting out game pieces, you could also use any small items you have around your house or classroom. Coins make great tic tac toe playing pieces. So do bingo chips or poker chips. Just assign each player a different color!
Perhaps you want to play several games of tic tac toe while keeping a record of who won each game. In this case, I offer free printable tic tac toe sheets which feature 9 different printable tic tac toes on a single page.
Using the Tic Tac Toe Board Printable in the Classroom
Tic Tac Toe can be enjoyed by students at such a wide variety of ages from elementary school to middle school or even high school. If you think basic tic tac toe would be too simple for your students, be sure to check out the next section below with more engaging and challenging variations of tic-tac-toe.
If you plan on having your students play tic tac toe on a regular basis, I recommend printing the blank tic tac toe boards on card stock for extra durability. You can also slide the templates into dry erase pockets so that students can play over and over again.
MATH = LOVE RECOMMENDS…
I cannot imagine teaching math without my dry erase pockets! They instantly make any activity more engaging and save me countless hours at the copy machine since I can use the same class sets of copies year after year.
Here are my current go-to recommendations:
- 8.5 x 11 Inch Dry Erase Pockets from Puroma
- 11 x 17 Inch Dry Erase Pockets from C-Line Products
- Expo Dry Erase Markers
Want to put a holiday spin on tic tac toe? You could put out these printable tic tac toe boards in your classroom along with some holiday-themed mini erasers for students to use instead of X’s and O’s.
Tic Tac Toe makes the perfect activity for early finishers since even most young children should know how to play tic tac toe without needing instructions. Be sure to check out the rest of my collection of paper games that can be used for both independent work and early finishers.
I have also created a jumbo magnetic tic tac toe game board in my classroom that was a huge hit.
Other Tic-Tac-Toe Games
If the traditional tic tac toe game doesn’t provide enough challenge for your students, I offer a variety of other printable games that are variations on tic tac toe.
Ultimate Tic Tac Toe
Ultimate Tic Tac Toe (also known as Super Tic Tac Toe) involves nine smaller tic tac toe boards inside of one large tic tac toe board. The goal of Ultimate Tic Tac Toe is to be the first player to win three games of tic tac toe in a row.
It is a highly strategic game because each player’s move helps determine the places on the board that the next player is allowed to move to.
I highly recommend printing my free ultimate tic tac toe game board since it can be quite tedious to draw the grid yourself!
Circle Tic Tac Toe
Tired of playing on a traditional 3×3 square grid? Circle Tic Tac Toe is another variation of tic tac toe that I learned about from Carl Horowitz.
Circle Tic Tac Toe is a fun twist on classic tic-tac-toe. It is played on a circular grid, and there is an added challenge of getting four in a row instead of three. With three different ways to win, this game is sure to be a fun and engaging challenge.
