Celebrate the first week of school with these grade level tangram puzzles for kindergarten through ninth grade.

Looking for more first day of school activities and puzzles for your classroom? I have a giant blog post dedicated to 40+ activities for the first week of school.
Here’s a few examples of some of these engaging activities for the beginning of the school year.
Tangram Puzzle Instructions
Choose the appropriate tangram puzzle for your students’ grade level. I have created tangram puzzles for kindergarten through ninth grade.
Use a standard set of 7 tangram pieces to form the outlined shape. The tangram pieces may be flipped over, but they may not overlap.
Supplies
For these grade level tangram puzzles, you will need a set of plastic tangram pieces. If you do not have a set or if your set is the wrong size, I have also provided a set of printable pieces.
These tangram templates (if printed at 100% actual size) are specially designed for plastic tangram pieces which form a four inch square. The large triangle piece should measure 4 inches on its longest side.
Printing Instructions
The printable tangram pieces are designed to print two sets of pieces to one letter-sized sheet of paper.
When you print the tangram template for your grade level, you can also print the first page with the tangram square templates and use that to place your plastic tangram pieces on to see if they are the correct size.
Friendly Reminder: Make sure you are printing at 100% size. If your computer auto-selects “Fit to Page,” the templates will not be properly sized for the plastic pieces. You can check that it has printed at “Actual Size” by measuring the tangram square with a ruler to see if it has a side length of 4 inches.
If you do choose to scale the print job, the printable pieces should scale in accordance with the templates.
Adapting the Activity for Students
If you are working with younger students or if you are focusing on fine motor skills instead of problem solving skills, you might think about printing the solutions page for students instead of the puzzle page.
This will give students outlined sections to place each tangram inside.
My 2.5 year old was able to put together the Welcome to Kindergarten puzzle that I printed off to make sure everything was sized correctly.

Puzzle Solutions
Puzzle solutions are available on a password-protected solution page. I do not openly post the puzzle answer keys because one of my goals as a resource creator is to craft learning experiences for students that are non-google-able. I want teachers to be able to use these puzzles in their classrooms without the solutions being found easily on the Internet.
Please email me at sarah@mathequalslove.net for the password to the answer key database featuring all of my printable puzzles and math worksheets. I frequently have students emailing me for the answer key, so please specify in your email what school you teach at and what subjects you teach. If you do not provide these details, I will not be able to send you the password.
Not a teacher? Go ahead and send me an email as well. Just let me know what you are using the puzzles for. I am continually in awe of how many people are using these puzzles with scouting groups, with senior adults battling dementia, or as fun activities in their workplace. Just give me enough details so I know you are not a student looking for answers to the puzzle that was assigned as their homework!
